DVD/150: LOS AMANTES PASAJEROS (I'm So Excited) (Pedro Almodóvar, 2013)

After the sombre THE SKIN I LIVE IN, Almodóvar returned to the day-glo comedy of his early films with LOS AMANTES PASAJEROS.  Imagine a sex-crazed verson of AIRPORT...

The crew aboard a Peninsula Airlines flight for Mexico discover not only are the in-flight movies and phones not working but the landing gear is broken requiring an emergency landing.

As the plane circles waiting for a runway, the few first class passengers reveal themselves - in more ways than one - while the three gay air stewards swallow drink and drugs to calm their nerves.  Luckily the economy class passengers have all already been sedated.

Onboard are a psychic virgin, a rich dominatrix with 600 sex tapes of powerful men, an actor fleeing a broken relationship, a banker fleeing arrest and a mysterious man interested in the dominatrix.

And there's a reason why it's called the cock-pit...

Buen viaje!

Shelf or charity shop? Kept for Pedro, but it's sadly not as funny as it promises and Almodóvar's hidden satire of Spain's reaction to financial chaos isn't sharp enough.  There are saving graces - Javier Cámara as senior steward Joserra is always a delight and there are good performances from Almodóvar alumni Lola Duenas and Cecilia Roth - and it is worth it for the sudden camp highlight of stewards Cámera, Raúl Arévalo and Carlos Areces doing a fully choreographed routine around the cabin to The Pointer Sisters singing "I'm So Excited"; for a few minutes the film achieves full flight...
